Photos by Adam Potts
At Coyuchi, we believe that design is a way of life—one that brings beauty and sustainability into every home. That’s why we were thrilled to sit down with the visionary duo behind Hommeboys Interiors, an award-winning design studio whose work transforms everyday spaces into refined expressions of art and comfort.
In our interview, they share insights on crafting environments that seamlessly blend form and function, and reveal how their passion for sustainability drives every creative decision. Get ready to explore the inspirations that fuel their approach and find out which Coyuchi piece they turn to after a hard day’s work.
Thank you for welcoming us into your home. Please tell us a bit about yourself and how you spend your time.
We are Austin Carrier and Alex Mutter-Rottmayer, husbands and designers living and working in our Sonoma-based studio, home, and showroom. We live and breathe design and are almost always talking about our projects or our furniture lines together or working on new prototypes in our woodshop downtown. When we are not working, we love spending time with friends and family, entertaining at home, and going on outdoor adventures with our husky, Bowie.

What inspires you most when creating your ideal spaces? Is there a process you follow?
We take a lot of inspiration from the natural environment we are surrounded by here in Sonoma. We put a lot of emphasis on texture, hand-hewn treatments, and utilizing organic materials in innovative ways.

Do you feel your space is driven more by aesthetic or function?
In all our designs, we focus on the balance of form and function. This is very true for our own home, which is at once very design heavy and also effortless and comfortable. Nothing is too precious, but everything has been very thoughtfully collected or made by ourselves, our friends, or artisans we love to work with.

Can you tell us the stories behind some of your favorite things in your home?
Our home really tells the story of us and of Hommeboys. That is one thing we love most about being here, the ability to see where we have come from and where we are headed. We are surrounded by Haus of Hommeboys prototypes. This is really inspiring for us and is one of the reasons we are always thinking about design and sharing our creative ideas with each other, even during leisure. Our coffee table is our Bishop Pill Ottoman prototype. It acts as a coffee table, dining table, ottoman, and dance surface for friends late at night. Utilizing it daily this way lets us really speak to its durability and versatility with clients and customers!

Which Coyuchi piece do you gravitate toward the most?
One ritual that we do every single day is ending the day in our cedar hot tub. For this reason, the Unisex Organic Waffle robe is an absolute favorite. They are so soft and comfortable and also flattering! Perfect for throwing on to head to the hot tub or for lounging around after a long day in the studio.

How do the realms of design, food, and entertaining intersect in your life?
Well you just listed three of our favorite things, which intersect daily! Our community is centered around farming, food, and wine. When we moved to Sonoma, it was important for us to be a part of the creation of spaces in the community where we could gather with friends and eat good food, drink great wine. When we are not entertaining at our own home, you can find us at Valley Bar & Bottle or Valley Swim Club which are owned by dear friends and designed by Hommeboys.
